Competition Judges Reporting Sheet

Kilmington
June 2009
The village makes a striking first impression, with the sports field on one side, the village hall on the other and the colourful village nameboard.

We looked first at the sports field, and were impressed with the pavilion and nets facilities:  this is a village serious about its cricket!  Tennis players are also well catered for, as are small children, with their safely fenced area and range of equipment.  The benches around the sports field were in excellent condition and were litter free which we know is a difficult achievement.

The village hall is another great asset and we spent some time studying the notices and took away the Movieola idea for our own village.

We then took a look at the church and the cemeteries and were particularly taken with the Millennium Garden.  The standard of upkeep in the cemeteries was very high.  This part of our visit was to the accompaniments of the children singing in the school, which was an added bonus.

Other high points of our visit were the Common, which was a riot of colour and provided us with a welcome place to cool down on a hot day, and the wild flower area in the centre of the village, another idea that we took away to use ourselves!

This is a village with the diverse challenges of a busy A road on its boundary and a commercial concrete site in the village itself.  It is to everybody's credit that these difficulties are contained and that the rural community atmosphere is maintained.  We enjoyed our visit very much.

One small suggestion would be to provide judges with a better plan of the village.  The one currently in use does not do the village justice.
