Letter from the Vicar - July 2010

Curate’s a-comin’

The big news and the big event for July is the advent of our new Curate, Revd Kate Woolven, and her family, Jonathan and Jamie, to our Mission Community. They will have moved into Yarcombe Vicarage by the time you read this and we very much look forward to their time with us and Kate’s ministry with us.

I was reminded recently of the role and responsibilities of a Curate, and of the Vicar who is training them, and of the Parishes they come to serve and to learn with and from. Kate doesn’t come to us as an extra pair of hands to help out the Vicar or to fill in gaps where people want a cleric to appear. Kate is here to learn, to be a part of our Mission Community, to find her own part in these Parishes and to bring her own unique gifts and experience to our Parishes.

As part of this I would recommend a few things — first of all, don’t expect Kate to be able to do everything as soon as she arrives, there are certain things she won’t be able to do as she comes to us as a Deacon and not yet Priested. Also Kate’s experience is considerable, but she won’t know how we do things in our Mission Community and will want to find her own way of doing things here.

Also, don’t expect our Curate to be available to everyone all of the time. As part of the demands of her ‘Title post’ (which is the official name of her Training Curacy) she must put in a day a week of Study, as well as attending certain courses at the Diocese. Please continue to contact myself or Revd Anne Mills, or Joan Ewins, regarding Mission Community matters and Parish needs, until we establish exactly what is right for Kate’s ministry here and what responsibilities she should be taking.

Lastly, despite what I have said above, don’t treat Kate with Kid Gloves, she comes with a wealth of experience and giftings, and she will sometimes surprise us, disagree with the way things are done, challenge us, and I have no doubt at all she will inspire us. Pray for Kate, Jonathan and Jamie, for our Mission Community and for yourselves, that we may be woven together as Christ’s body and Christ’s ministers in our parishes, and together we will continue to be the Gospel here in East Devon.
