A most successful weekend of open gardens was held on 3rd and 4th July; the weather was kind and it was lovely to welcome people from the village and much further afield.
A huge thank you to all the openers who worked so hard weeding, mowing and buying
new plants! This was a joint, and happy, collaboration between KVPA and St Giles'
Church. It was initially set up so that KVP A could cover the gardens under their
insurance. We shared the ticket money and expenses, each receiving £274, and St Giles'
organised the teas, raising £293, which was a big boost to fund-
We have fixed a date for 2011 -

A Village Harvest Supper is being planned this year in the hope of attracting many residents to come along and celebrate the harvest home in the old traditional style. It will be held in the Village Hall on Monday 11 October at 6.00 pm to allow families to join in; informal country clothes including leggings and boots (not hobnail ones) if desired, would be encouraged. The supper is likely to be a tasty shepherds pie with vegetables followed by apple pie and tea/coffee. Bring your own drinks and you are reminded that “scrumpy cider” is sold at the garden centre near the Windmill garage on the A35. Entertainment will include “Swing of the Axe” with a talented vocalist and song sheets will be available for audience participation. There will be a raffle of produce and the judging of the giant onions sown at the Rogation Service held at Millers Farm Shop on 11 May. Please note the date in your diary and look out for further details next month.
For those that do not take the Parishes Paper, the Vicar is re-
Over the past few years in this country, a significant number of lapsed churchgoers have been attracted back to church after being invited to attend a special Service. Nationally, “Back to Church Sunday” this year is being celebrated on 26th September, and in St Giles’ Church at 11.00 am there will be an All Age Holy Communion which will include two Baptisms and the presentation of Duke of Edinburgh Awards to young people so there will be plenty to interest everyone. The Rev’d Alastair McCollum will give an especially warm welcome to those returning to Church and will undoubtedly talk about the many reasons that people may have lapsed and will obviously encourage them to rejoin by explaining the benefits of communal worship. There will also be the opportunity over refreshments afterwards to let the Vicar and Church Wardens know what would attract you to attend regularly. Please come because we need you probably more than you need us! If you would like to be picked up and/or escorted to the Service, please contact the Vicar on 01297 33156.
ORDINATION OF REV’D KATE WOOLVEN – 25 SEPT
Bishop Bob Evens will conduct the Ordination to Priesthood Service for the Rev’d Kate Woolven, the new curate in the Mission Community, at St Giles’ Church on Saturday 25th September at 2.00 pm. Please come along to welcome Kate and her family and to hear Bishop Bob, the very charismatic and warm hearted Bishop of Crediton, who will undoubtedly have something to say of relevance to everyone. He would be delighted to talk to you over refreshments afterwards.
While not quite so many supported the Fete this year held on Saturday 17th
July those
that did obviously appreciated the hard work put in by the organisers, stall holders,
kitchen helpers and those that contributed refreshments, cakes, gifts, books, plants
and items for the bottle and tin tombola as well as for the draw. Children had fun
with the various games and most tucked in to the delicious cream teas. £1,000 was
raised for Church funds and it proved to be a very successful and enjoyable occasion.

Nearly 100 residents and visitors assembled in the Vicarage garden on a beautiful day for a Songs of Praise led by the Honiton Town Band on Sunday 18th July. The Vicar welcomed everyone and gave very interesting historical backgrounds to the hymns/songs chosen by residents, who in turn gave their accounts of why they had made their choice. The enthusiastic singing echoed around the Village and obviously encouraged the Kilmington Cricket Club to defeat Les Herbs! Refreshments were enjoyed by everyone afterwards and the Honiton Town Band deservedly received much praise.
ST GILES’ CHURCH EVENTS
The Clergy and Church Wardens will be outside St Giles’ Church on Saturday 4th September from 10.00 am – 4.00 pm to receive monetary gifts needed to cover the Parish Church expenses. The Vicar will be writing to all households to explain why your help for our Church is so necessary. Your support would be much appreciated. The Patronal Festival of St Giles will be celebrated at an Evensong the following day, Sunday 5th September at 6.30 pm. You can be sure of a warm welcome with tea/coffee at the back of the Church afterwards
The 360th Anniversary of the likely opening of the Loughwood Meeting House was celebrated
by a Service there on Sunday 4th July, conducted by Pastor Darrell Holmes. It was
built deep in Loughwood Woods and records show that a Baptist congregation in Kilmington
sought refuge from persecution there
during a period when such churches were deemed
illegal. It was the Mother Church of Lyme Regis, Chard and other places and was
the rallying centre of the East Devon Baptist stalwarts who were not ashamed of their
faith, nor afraid to defend it. In his Address, Darrell referred to the destructive
fire at the Baptist Chapel in Shute Road and mentioned the plans whereby it was hoped
to purchase a new site in Kilmington to erect a purpose-
The Meeting House is now preserved by the National Trust and is well worth a visit.
COFFEE MORNING FOR PARISH CHURCH FUNDS
A coffee morning in aid of St Giles' Church funds will be held at Acorn, Shute Road, from 10.00 am to Noon on Saturday 21st August, by kind permission of Mike and Mary Tyler. Apart from the refreshments, there will be a cake stall, a draw and musical entertainment by "The Swinging Axe Group". Plenty of car parking is available on road and up Ashes, and everyone can look forward to a warm welcome and magnificent views over the Axe Valley from a lovely garden. In the event of bad weather, the Village Hall will be used
WORLD CUP IN ST GILES’
Adam Diment, the Youth Worker for the Baptist Church in Kilmington, organised big
screen matches of the World Cup, the first of which wa
s in St Giles’ Church on Saturday
evening 12 June when England played its first game against the USA. The excitement
when Steven Gerrard scored in the 4th minute was quickly followed by shock when Robert
Green let in a goal for the Stars and Stripes. The youngsters clearly enjoyed the
occasion with light refreshments available instead of the usual beer and strong lager!
Perhaps this could be the start of opening our Churches to other popular events?
There was a good attendance for the Lyme Bay Chorale Concert in St Giles’ Church on Sunday 16 May, conducted by Alex Davis. Among the items performed were Haydn’s “Te Deum”, Brahms “How lovely are Thy dwellings” and Psalm 48 “Great is the Lord” to a setting by Peter Milmer. The only disappointment was that the talented soprano Susie Milmer was unwell but Christopher Balcomb gave splendid tenor solos and young Lauren Kerslake proved to be an excellent clarinettist. Cream teas were enjoyed in the Village Hall during the interval and the concert raised well over £200 for St Giles’ Church Funds after all fees and expenses had been paid, thanks to the organisation of Margaret Hurford.
The Honiton Town Band has been booked for a Songs of Praise in the Vicarage Garden
at 3.00 pm on Sunday 18th July. The event proved extremely popular last year with
well known and popular songs/hymns; everyone in the local area is invited with family
and friends. Anyone wishing to choose a song/hymn should contact the Vicar on 01297
33156 indicating whether they would be willing to explain at the event the reason
for their choice. Refreshments will be served afterwards. You can also take in the
cricket match on the playing field opposite when the Kilmington Cricket Club will
be playing a visiting team -
The St Giles’ Church Annual Fete will be held in the Village Hall at 2.30 pm on Saturday 17th July with activities spilling outside if the weather is favourable. There will be a variety of stalls including plant, cake, book, nearly new gifts as well as a “bottle tombola” and a draw for which contributions would be most welcome. There will be side shows and games to entertain the children and cream teas and other refreshments will be available. Please support the occasion by bringing family and friends as all profit will go to your Parish Church Funds.
ST GILES’ CHURCH SAUSAGE SIZZLE
A walk from the Village Hall followed by a Sausage Sizzle is planned for Saturday 19th June starting at 4.00 pm, to raise funds for the Church. The walk around the village will not be too demanding and will include a quiz prepared by Peter Huscroft to be completed en route. For those not wishing to participate in the walk, a quiz will be available in the Village Hall where wine, cider, squash, tea and coffee will be served. The plan is to have the Sausage Sizzle ready by 5.30 pm. Tickets at £3, children free, will be available from Hurfords Stores or the Church Wardens. We hope that many people from the Village will join us for what should be a very sociable occasion.
At the “Vestry” Meeting prior to the AGM in the Village Hall on 18 April 10, Ann

The Vicar handed out copies of the draft Parish Plan explaining that some of the questions needed to be considered and the 30 or so present split into groups to discuss it. Group spokesmen presented the views which were thought to be very useful; the Vicar promised to incorporate them into a final draft. Thanks to everyone who attended but especially to the Vicar who has ministered to us all so well over the past year.
Malcolm Miller and family have kindly agreed to host a Rogation Family Service to celebrate the season of planting on Sunday 9th May at 3.00 pm. Most will know that Malcolm grows quite a lot of produce which is sold in the shop and it will be interesting to learn how he does it and how the family cope with such a large business. The Rev’d Alastair McCollum will lead the Service in a barn adjacent to the shop and the music group will be present to lead the songs and hymns. Children will be given giant onion seeds to plant in the compost and pots provided; at Harvest Festival on 10th October, prizes will be awarded for the largest onions. The Service will be informal, child friendly and very much an ecumenical event with refreshments to which everyone is invited.
EASTER SUNDAY IN KILMINGTON
Fine weather and a loud dawn chorus greeted the 17 early “disciples” assembling at the Shute Beacon symbolic tomb to find it empty again! It was a moving short Service in which Christ’s resurrection from the dead was celebrated whilst Easter hymns echoed down the valley. The Rev’d Darell Holmes gave the Blessing after which Anglicans and Baptists departed to their own Services. The Rev’d Anne Mills conducted the 9.00 am Family Communion in a beautifully decorated St Giles’ Church. The children went out to an Easter egg hunt in theVicarage Garden and for activities in the Village Hall, organised by Jo McCollum, before rejoining the congregation. It was a pleasure to meet several visitors to Kilmington for Easter during refreshments afterwards.
MOTHERING SUNDAY AT ST GILES'
Attendance at the afternoon Mothers Day Service was a bit disappointing, attributable perhaps because a number of families had gone out to lunch and it was a very nice day. Nevertheless, the Vicar gave us all a very warm welcome and there were some lovely hymns/songs with some very relevant readings. All the presentation posies were distributed to the ladies in the congregation but there were plenty left to take away for families and friends. About 50 people sat down in the Village Hall afterwards for a delicious tea and everyone clearly enjoyed themselves.

ST GILES CHURCH FLOWERS
Some Kilmington residents like to fund lilies at Easter in memory of loved ones. The large arum lilies can cost up to £5 per stem while longi florum lilies are considerably less. Please pass your orders to the undersigned. The Church Flower Fund is badly in need of contributions; while most of the flower arrangers kindly donate their flowers, festival occasions require additional expense to keep the Parish Church looking lovely. Your donations would be much appreciated by the undersigned.

All Parishioners on the Register of Local Government elections are invited to coffee/tea in the Village Hall, Kilmington, at 7.00 pm on Monday 19th April where they can vote at the “Vestry Meeting” to elect St Giles’ Church Wardens, starting at 7.30 pm. The AGM will follow which is open to everyone, although only those on the Church Electoral Roll are eligible to vote. Please come along as the opportunity to air your views will be available.
Clive Garner kindly conducted a Quiz Night in the Kilmington Village Hall on Saturday 27th February in aid of St Giles Church funds. Over 80 in teams of up to six enjoyed the challenge of answering a range of questions posed in his informal and friendly style; his daughter Rebecca ensured that the scoring was both fast and accurate. The ploughman’s supper in the interval was followed by a raffle organised by Mary Seward and Barbara Woodsford. Prizes were awarded to the first two teams. Clive was thanked for boosting Church funds by some £450 and congratulated on his remarkable effort of raising nearly £30,000 for various charities from Quiz Nights in the New Inn and at other locations.
PALM SUNDAY PROCESSION AND SERVICE
The Palm Sunday Procession on 28th March is planned to start at 10.30 am from Kilmington Common led by a donkey, routing along The Hill and down The Street stopping for songs, prayers and Readings en route to St Giles’ Church for a combined Family Service with the Baptists at 11.15am. Palm crosses will be handed out on the way and everyone is invited to join this colourful event as we remember the ride through Jerusalem by Jesus on a donkey some 2,000 years ago. Refreshments will be served in the Village Hall afterwards.
ST GILES’ CHURCH FLOWER ARRANGERS MEETING
A Coffee Morning for St Giles’ Church flower arrangers will be held on Wednesday 24th March at 10.30 am in The Cider Orchard to discuss the rota for the next Church year and to resolve any problems/questions. Individual invitations will be sent to the usual team but anyone who is prepared to join it would be most welcome, even if only to help; please contact either of the undersigned.

MOTHERING SUNDAY SERVICE AND TEA
Mothering Sunday this year falls on 14th March and will be celebrated by a Family Service in St Giles’ Church at 3.00 pm to which all families and friends are warmly invited. The Service will obviously be very child friendly and posies will be available to present to all mothers present. Afternoon tea will be served in the Village Hall afterwards, with entertainment, tickets for which will be available from Hurfords Stores or the Church Wardens at £4 per adult, children free.
THE REV'D LINCOLN JONES
Lincoln celebrated his 90th birthday on 20 November having served as a Parish Priest all his life, actively supported by his wife Valiant. He was born near Cardiff, the younger of two brothers and a sister. He realised at Grammar School that he wanted to become a Minister and went on to theological college at Llandaff being ordained in Llandaff Cathedral in 1943. He served in a number of parishes in Wales before moving across the border to parishes in Somerset until retirement as Vicar of Bishops Liddiard at the age of 65. He moved to Kilmington in 1981 and continued to preach in churches in the Benefice supporting Shute Church in particular. He was Chaplain of the Kilmington Branch of the Royal British Legion for over 20 years. We congratulate him and thank him for his long ministry.

Clive Garner kindly agreed to conduct a Quiz night in the Kilmington Village Hall at 7.30 pm on Saturday 27 January in aid of St Giles’ Church funds. Subsequently, he slipped on ice and damaged his head and back, but if he is not fit enough, the Quiz will go ahead somehow! Tickets will be on sale from Hurfords Stores or from the Church Wardens at £5 to include a Ploughmans supper with coffee or tea. You are welcome to bring your own drinks for which glasses will be provided. Come along to join a team for an informal and fun evening with the chance of winning prizes. Donations for the raffle would be much appreciated. Meanwhile, our best wishes to Clive for a speedy recovery.

Not in St Giles' Church, Kilmington! Hundreds passed through its doors over the Advent/Christmas
Season this year. Most were to attend the scheduled Services, large numbers to raise
funds for restoration of the Tower bells, many to hang golden stars on the Memory
tree recording the names of nearly 500 absent loved ones, a good number to see the
Church beautifully decorated with red poinsettias loaned from residents, some to
attend two funerals and a baptism, and a few to offer silent prayer at a very holy
time of year. Increased attendance by young people was very notable, perhaps due
to the enormous success of the monthly Messy Church activities that take place in
the Village Hall and Church in conjunction with the Kilmington Baptist Church. The
Vicar, the Rev'd Alastair McCollum, who is also Vicar to the four other Parishes
in the Five Alive Mission Community, ably supported by the Rev'd Anne Mills, the

CHRISTINGLE AT ST GILES'
St Giles' Church, Kilmington, was very crowded for the Christingle Service with Baptism, conducted by the Rev'd Alastair McCollum, on Sunday 13th December. With Christingles adorning the altar, the Christmas and Memory Trees lit and candles flickering in the windows, it was a very festive scene which brought a wholehearted response from the 40 plus children present. The Vicar welcomed everyone and after songs, prayers and readings, he baptised Joshua and Jasmine Bargery while their parents, godparents and everyone present welcomed them as members of the Church with candles representing the Light of the World. The Vicar then explained the significance of the Christingles which most of the children seemed to know already. The children, some with their parents, collected them from the Vicar and after they were lit the children sang Away in a Manger; there were even some spare Christingles to give to neighbours and friends. It was a colourful and vibrant Service buzzing in anticipation of the Christmas celebrations to come. £232 of the collection was donated to The Children's Society.
