History

Early records indicate that warriors defending the forts at Musbury and Membury in 937AD were buried in Kilmington churchyard, and it is possible that there was a chapel on the site then. There was definitely one during the reign of Edward I (1272-1305), probably consisting of a small Nave and Chancel divided from each other by a screen with the Crucifix (Rood) over it.  The Lancet windows to the north and south of the present altar are thought to have come from it. The present tower was built in the reign of Henry
VII (1485-1509) and it remains substantially the same today.  The six bells were installed in the tower at various times between 1672 and 1895.  In about 1800 AD it is recorded that four arches were removed from the Nave; these probably separated the Nave and North Aisle.

The Church was completely rebuilt in 1862 at a cost of £1,330.  It is a good example of Victorian Churches with an open plan and good acoustics.  On the ceiling of the North Aisle at the back of the Church you will notice the Royal Arms; these date from Charles II and were probably once over the Chancel Arch in the Nave.  The hatchment over the tower arch is a memorial to the Tucker family of Coryton Park.  The present Lady Chapel (1958) was the Tucker Chapel, hence the coat of arms in the window.  An extension to the Churchyard and a Millennium Memorial Garden were consecrated by the Lord Bishop of Exeter on 23 July 2000; to mark the third Millennium, the school children of Kilmington Primary School planted an Oak tree in the Churchyard extension on 26 October 2000, and a Yew tree supplied by the Conservation Society was also planted there. The North Door porch with long awaited toilet facilities was built in 2006/7 which, together with kitchen facilities fitted at the rear of the Church, cost over £90,000; they were dedicated by the Bishop of Crediton on Sunday 4 March 2007.

It is not known precisely when St Giles was adopted Patron Saint (records indicate that it was before 1587) but the picture of him in the Lancet window on the north side of the altar shows him comforting a hind.

Officers

Situation

St Giles’ Church is the Parish Church of Kilmington in a Benefice comprising Dalwood, Kilmington, Shute/Whitford, Stockland and Yarcombe.  It was commissioned as the first Mission Community in the Diocese by the Bishop of Crediton on 4th March 2007, now known as the "Five Alive Mission Community" and  it is part of the Honiton Deanery in the Diocese of Exeter.

Services

The routine Services are: Family Communion at 9.30 am on the 1st and 3rd Sundays, Family Services at 10.00 am on the 2nd Sundays, Holy Communion at 8.00 am on the fourth Sunday with Morning Worship or Matins at 11.00 am.  A Mission Community Service in one of the Parish Churches is often held on the 5th Sunday.  Holy Communion is celebrated on Tuesdays at 9.30 am  St Giles’ Church maintains close links with the Baptist Church in Kilmington and United Services are held each year.  Attendance at Services over the last five years has steadily improved and now averages 54.

Festivals/Special Events

Festivals and special events organised for the Parish Church are invariably well attended.  Those already in the calendar for 2010 are:-

Bible Study/Discussion Groups

These are usually held twice monthly on a Wednesday at 7.30 pm in “Mustins”.

Parochial Church Council

The PCC Members are either ex-officio or elected at the AGM and number about 20 including the Deanery Synod Representatives.  All Church business is conducted by the PCC including the production of the Five-Year Plan.  Some members of the PCC also serve on the Five Alive Mission Community Council.

Committees

The KPCC uses the Standing, Fabric, Fund Raising, Social and Worship and Mission Committees to assist with Church business.

Pastoral Team

The Pastoral Team comprises about six elected members from the congregation whose role is to help the Vicar with pastoral care when necessary.

Choir

There is a large adult choir under the musical director, Margaret Hurford, and a junior choir has been formed for the Family Services.  New choristers are always required and they should contact Margaret Hurford.

Music Group

The Music Group is made up of adult and junior instrumentalists.  Those interested in joining should contact Rachel Burrough.

Bell Ringers

More ringers are required for the six bells, and those interested should contact Roger Lovegrove.

Readers

Those interested in conducting Bible Readings or Intercessions should contact the Vicar or one of the Church Wardens.

Working Teams

Additional people are always required to help with the flower arranging, dusting, brass cleaning, coffee making, catering, clock winding and flag raising.

Visitors/New Residents

New members of the congregation are always warmly welcomed, and are asked to make themselves known to the Vicar and Church Wardens.

Coffee Shop

Coffee/tea is available at the back of the Church every Friday morning from 10.00 am to Noon. Everyone is welcome to come for a chat.
