CPRE & MVF’s
BEST KEPT VILLAGE
In Devon
COMPETITION
2006

The visit to Kilmington took place on a wonderfully warm Spring day. Our first visit was to Millers Farm Shop which has a wonderful selection of fresh and local fruit, vegetables and meat. This is a great asset to the village.
Although this is not a chocolate box village it appears to be very busy with many people caring and attending to gardens, grass, verges etc and to their various jobs.
The village green was pleasant and welcoming as was the playing field with its new pavilion/club house. The children’s play area was an obvious attraction and was well appointed. There are many notice boards throughout the village which are clear and up to date. These included a notice about the Best Kept Village Competition. The windows of the post office are also used to display a variety of notices.
The majority of buildings, gardens and allotments are well maintained and there are many excellent gardeners in the village.
The church is a welcoming place for visitors, congregations and children. There are obviously plenty of activities arranged for all. The churchyard around the church was in need of attention but the millennium garden has created an area of peace and comfort. The newly dedicated churchyard has been beautifully set out. The Baptist Chapel has clear notice boards advertising a wide range of activities and has good facilities.
The Village Hall would appear to be well used for a wide range of activities and it is surrounded by clean tidy and well marked car park.
The only minor disappointments were that the telephone kiosk was rather dirty and would not be pleasant to use and the area marked on the map, which you gave us, as ‘display of flowers’ was very overgrown and untidy.
Apart from this we were very impressed with the village which obviously has a well developed sense of community spirit. We also feel that there should be a very special prize for the fantastic toilets at the New Inn.
