Competition Judges Reporting Sheet

Kilmington
June 2007
First impressions of Kilmington were of an active community with a strong sense of "pride of place".  It is fortunate in having a focal point of the village hall and car park, church and playing field, identified with the attractive village sign surrounded by flowers.

The whole area was particularly well maintained, although at the time of our visit the churchyard was somewhat overdue for a cut.  However, the Millenium garden was a delight and the churchyard extension was neatly laid out.  The church was open and is clearly very active.

Commercial premises were mostly very tidy and the open spaces had been managed.

There was a virtually total absence of litter and private buildings and gardens were well maintained, and the allotments were all taken and tended.  The telephone kiosk, however, was much in need of attention.

Kilmington is clearly an active village judging by the various well-displayed posters, although a number were a little out of date and one was 3 months old! Posters informed us of what turned out to be an excellent new village website, and there is much evidence of initiatives to enhance the community.  We liked the information board describing flowers along the brook.

We found nothing else to highlight of particular concern in this attractive village and enjoyed our visit.

From the Organiser of the Best Kept Village In Devon Competition 2007.

"Many congratulations to Kilmington for winning the Large Village Category of Best Kept Village 2007.  I do hope the village will want to celebrate this success by holding a presentation in late September or October.  A representative from CPRE and from MVF (as well as one or two judges) will present the village with a shield, traditional green road sign, framed certificate and £100 of MVF tokens at this event...."
