Kilmington is very fortunate in having a wonderful facility. It is located opposite the Church for the benefit of the community providing an open area, on which traditional village cricket is still played in the summer months. In addition, there is a children’s playground which was constructed to celebrate the millennium, and an all-weather tennis court adds to the recreational facilities.
In 2006 a completely new pavilion was constructed, which incorporates all modern day requirements, a club room which is available for hire, kitchen, changing facilities for sport and a garage to house equipment for maintaining the field and its surrounds. A feature of the playing fields is the very fine Monterey Pine, which is jealously guarded by the community and is close to being 100 years old.
So how did Kilmington obtain such fine facilities for the benefit of the inhabitants?
The Kilmington Playing Fields are a registered charity, so preserved for the future, as the result of a benefactor in the early part of the 20th Century. Records show that cricket was played in the village well prior to 1900, but during the 1900/1910 period an Arthur Hitchcock arrived in Kilmington to build himself a fine house, which still stands today, and he was a very philanthropic Victorian gentleman of some wealth and was very involved with the local community, together with his wife, on many organisations involving gardening and nursing and it would appear his particular interest cricket and bowls. Through the early part of the 20th Century he promoted the cricket team, developed the bowls club and constructed, prior to
1910, a wooden cricket pavilion which has just been replaced, as unfortunately despite much character it had become outdated. He was also involved in the construction of the Church rooms, opposite the now relatively new village hall, which became outdated and has been removed and the land incorporated back into the playing fields. On his demise in the 1930’s the whole was given to the village and the charity was formed. There seems little doubt that he planted the Monterey Pine and it is hoped that this tree can be maintained for many years as a fantastic memorial to our benefactor.
The playing fields are administered by trustees who are all locally elected, representing the playing organisations, the Parish Council and the local community and any contact can be made through the secretary, Chris Bolton, Elm Lodge, Kilmington, 01297 32351,
Participants are always welcome to join the tennis club or the cricket club, or to use the facilities, or indeed to hire the club room which can cater for up to 40 people, seated or for lectures, children’s parties etc.
The cost of hiring the Pavilion is £8.00 for the first hour and £5.00 for subsequent hours. Special daily rates are available. For bookings and special rates please contact Michael O’Flaherty on 35873.
