Speed campaign silent protest plan
A PEACEFUL protest might be the answer in the fight for speed restrictions to be put in place on the A35 through Kilmington.
Although positive steps have been taken and support is beginning to mount on their side, leaders of the campaign feel that protest could be the answer if the Highways Agency do not help.
Concerned residents, who have been meeting regularly in the village to discuss the way forward in securing a speed limit to protect their children and elderly residents who cross the road, have made some progress since launching their campaign in September. But at the last meeting they decided that protest might be the answer.
After contacting the Highways Agency it was confirmed that a full traffic survey would be carried out along the stretch of road and the results would be compiled and a conclusion should be drawn by the end of March 2008,
Although they felt this was positive news, campaign organisers Jenny Heathman and Mike Jones still had concerns over the length of time is was going to take and about the lack of signage suggesting that there was a school nearby, on a road which was notorious for accidents. They decided to carry on with the petition, which has collected more than 500 signatures, until February when they would call a public meeting and discuss the next step forward.
It was suggested that they would hear what the results of the report say. And, if their request for speed restrictions and safe crossing points was still rejected, they would consider organising a protest. Campaigner organiser Mr Jones reported how he had contacted a road safety charity called Brake which specialises in helping communities to make their roads safer for residents and especially children.
Mr Jones explained that the charity supported communities in many ways, including helping with legal issues, campaigning and organising protests. They even have a zebra named Zak which helped to attract attention during campaigns.
The next meeting to discuss a speed limit for the A35 is planned for Thursday, February 7th, at 7pm at The Old Inn
