A35 speed limit comes step closer

CONCERNED villagers in Kilmington are one step closer in winning their battle to have a speed limit along the dangerous stretch of road running through their village, after gaining support from county council officials.
Worried residents and parents in Kilmington. who got together to fight for a speed limit on the A35, are praising the news that they have the backing of Devon county councillors.
After a recent meeting held in the village to discuss forming an action plan to tackle the problem head on, district councillor for Kilmington lain Chubb pledged to take the village’s concerns to European MP Neil Parish and said he would represent Kilmrngtoa’s case.
The proposal for a speed limit was then brought to the attention of East Devon Highways and Traffic Orders Committee. The committee discussed traffic calming in Kilnington and resolved that “the Executive be asked to urge the Highways Agency to consider options for reducing the speed of traffic on the A35 through Kilmington and provide a safe crossing for pedestrians.”
This decision was later discussed on Tuesday, September 25th at Devon County Council’s Executive Meeting.
Since then, county councillor Douglas Hull has pledged his support and informed residents that Devon County Council have backed their case 100 per cent.
He said: “A panel of councillors visited the site and said that they wouldn’t even cross the road let alone expect a
child to cross.
“There are 16 entrances and exits along that stretch of road and there have been several near misses. There have been 14 reported accidents in the past two years and the local police are also in support of the idea for a speed limit.
“The county council have no power over the Highway’s Authority. All they can do is put their case forward and put in a request, but the village is one step further and have built up a lot of support and I am very pleased.”
