Residents urged to pen letters in A35 slower traffic bid

KILMINGTON residents who would like to see traffic slowed down on the A35 through the village are being urged to put pen to paper.
Villagers want to see the road made safer and, at a meeting on Thursday, it was agreed for individuals to continue to write to the Highways Agency, Devon County Council and MPs.
Although the Highways Agency has agreed to complete a survey into the road, including looking at a lower speed limit, the campaigners want more action.
As well as the detailed study taking place next year, improved signing in the village and work to improve the bus stop footpath is also due to take place, subject to funds being agreed.
Devon County Council’s Deputy Director for Environment, Economy and Culture Ian Harrison has now written to a Mr M Hornbrook at the Highways Agency about concerns over the safety of children trying to cross the road.
In the letter he urges the agency to consider options for reducing the speed of traffic and to provide a safe crossing for pedestrians.
Now people are being asked to write to the Highways Agency as well as MEPs and MPs about their A35 stories to keep the pressure up.
Axminster Councillor Douglas Hull has been supporting the campaign and got Devon County Council’s Executive to agree the letter being drafted.
If people would like to make their views known they should write to Mr M Hornbrook at the following address: Highways Agency, TO South West Area 2, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Temple Quay, Bristol, 851 6HA.
Four hundred people have so far signed a petition calling for the measures and a peaceful roadside protest could take place in the future.
An unofficial road survey looking at the village turnings is also likely to be carried out by residents.
The next public meeting on the issue wilt take place on Thursday, November 15th at 7pm in the Old Inn in Kilmington.
