Crossing, but for Chideock

KILMINGTON A35 Action Group has spoken out in response to a letter from the Department for Transport.
The group is campaigning to see speed restrictions and pedestrian crossings installed at the road running through the village.
In a letter addressed to the Midweek Herald, Stephen Ladyman, Minister of State for Transport, said: “As you know, a number of strategically important developments are currently progressing throngh the planning process in East Devon.
“Inevitably, the construction of these developments will generate a significant amount of HGV traffic.
“Minor improvement schemes are planned at locations along the A35, including the provision of a pedestrian crossing at Chideock, and proposed improvements to the footway at Kilmington Cross and the Hill bus stop in Kilmington.”
Bill Kerslake of the A35 Action Group and Kilmington Parish Council said:
“We are fully aware that traffic flow is increasing- along the A35 and through our village. This only increases the need for speed control measures to be installed through the village as we have a significant elderly population and a school less than 100 yards from the road.
“I’m surprised to see Chideock may get a pedestrian crossing and not Kilmington, as we have a considerably larger population in our village.
“I speak not only for the A35 Group and Kilmington Parish Council, but I’m sure for all the residents of Kilmington in saying that this letter does not address the problems adequately.
“We are delighted to see that a speed limit is being considered, but we need pedestrian crossings installed rather than improvements to the footways.”
