Villagers step up pressure for A35 speed restriction
MEMBERS of the Kilmington A35 action group are urging people to write to the highways authorities asking for a speed limit along the notoriously dangerous stretch of road.
Villagers have been campaigning for a speed limit along the A35 that runs through the village for some years, and have recently made some progress.
For the past few months they have been meeting to discuss ways in which they could secure a limit to reduce the speed of traffic through the village.
The A35 through Kilmington is a notorious accident blackspot. A few years ago a young girl was knocked down while walking to school and car accidents are a regular occurrence, particularly at Gammons Hill.
This year alone there have already been four traffic accidents on January 21st and 25th and February 7th and 11th.
Axminster Police Sergeant, Dave Sheldrake, said he is personally supporting the campaign.
He said: “I support the group’s aims for the reduction of speed with the proximity of the road to residences, the garage and farm shop, which are all very busy. The number of accidents at the location concerns me. They are above the normal number of what we would expect. I suspect the accidents are down to driver error or excess speed.
“If speed restrictions were in place then the officers and myself could carry out speed enforcement but we cannot do that as it is a national speed limit road.
“I am supporting the campaign and my personal view is that the speed should be lowered through Kilmington.”
The action group are urging people in the viilage to write to the Highways Agency with their concerns about safety along the road. They started a petition in the village, which now has more than 400 signatures, and will be sent to Roger Stribling at the Highways Agency.
A traffic survey was carried out in January and the group are waiting to hear the results, which should be ready by April.
