Making a rubbish point

REGULAR attendees of Kilmington Baptist Church have been making a political point about the amount ot rubbish thrown awa. They have been collecting sacks full of waste which could be recycled but isn’t.
The congregation decided to hold their own recycling collection throughout May, focussing on the ‘items which East Devon District Council do not currently collect with their recycling service, including Tetra Pak packaging, cardboard and plastic bottles.
In total, churchgoers collected more than eight sacks full of rubbish.
The Reverend Darrell Holmes said: "lt goes to show that people are willing to recycle and the local council need to take notice and influence policy.
“This means in practice that many people take small amounts to the tip in their own cars, negating any environmental benefit. If only there were local collection points for this recyclable material.
“This mini-mountain of rubbish demonstrates that people are willing to recycle, but require EDDC to encourage even more recycling and make it easier. It is the next generation and beyond that will suffer if we fail to recycle all we can.
“It has been an eye opener for us all and it goes to show what ends up in the landfill when it could be recycled instead.”
Volunteers will now take the rubbish to the local recycling centre.
