FUN FOR ALL AT KILMINGTON ANNUAL SHOW

Good weather helped to bring crowds to the Kilmington Annual Show on Saturday 30th July where the Village Produce Association (KVPA) had arranged a spectacular exhibition of produce and crafts with over 630 entries submitted by Village residents and some from near and far.  BJ Lewis, Chairman of the Association welcomed everyone and Bill Kerslake, President of the Association, introduced Gill Collier and Gill Perkins (former “milk ladies” who had delivered pints in the local area for many years) who opened the show.  The Royal Horticultural Society judges commended the standard of entries in all categories for a small village and one commented that Kilmington was her favourite village show.  The Society’s Banksian Medal and the Association’s Silver Challenge Cup were awarded to Kilmington’s Nigel Philips who entered an amazing 46 different classes of vegetables, fruit and flowers.  Trophies for individual sections were awarded to John Thorne for vegetables, Stephanie Hathaway for flowers, Angie Clarke for flower arranging, Carol Roberts for preserves, David Wilsdon for wine and beer, Abigail Philips for handicraft, Mrs P Jones for needlecraft, David Vickers for art, John Mellows for photography and Alison Dare for cookery.  Children submitted imaginative and intricate exhibits including monsters in modelling clay, paper crowns, a covered wagon made from matchsticks and a splendid flotilla of boats made from vegetables.  In the Under 8 category, Millie Chadwick won the Pavilion and Miller Cups and Niamh Stoneham won the Collier Shield and Barrel Cup in the 8-14 age group.

The show opened with traditional fancy dress, this year involving “Hats” for which Stephanie Hathaway won the adult award and Charlie Dare the children’s award. Saffron with Helen Shaw won the “dog most like the owner” prize while Dylan with Peter Ball won the “best six leg” competition.  The Swing of the Axe Music Group and the Honiton Town Band kept everyone entertained throughout the afternoon and Gina’s Bellygees dancers from Axminster put on an attractive and colourful display.  The Old Inn’s burgers and drinks stand, the cream teas organised by the Baptist Church and the teas with cakes at the Pavilion organised by David Smith provided the necessary sustenance, supplemented by delicious ice cream from the Otter Valley Dairy   The children’s races were popular as was the coconut shy and other games and competitions. After the presentation of prizes, Gill Gibbs was thanked and warmly applauded for organising another very successful and enjoyable Village Show.   It was a real Village team effort with a lot of hard work particularly by the KVPA Committee.
