It is awful to watch somebody you love slip away from you and be powerless to help. That’s how Sue Giles describes losing her husband to Alzheimer’s.
Sue and her husband Jim, 75, had only been married for three months when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in September 2001. Four years ago he moved into Koppers Retirement Home in Kilmington, and Sue had to adjust to life without him.
“It’s heartbreaking”, she said. “Experiencing somebody you love becoming a victim of Alzheimer’s is like holding on to a fistful of dry sand.”
Sue may have been powerless to halt the advance of Jim’s condition, but she was determined to fight back in some way. And that has led her to organize a concert to raise money for Alzheimer’s Research. The concert will be held in Kilmington Parish Church on Sunday, July 8th, at 7.30pm and will star the award winning Exevox Chamber Choir, which is well known in the Exeter area.
Sue sings with the choir, directed by Peter Adcock. “We will perform a variety of classical and lighter works”, she said.
Tickets for the evening, which promises to be a treat for all music lovers, are on sale at Hurford Stores in Kilmington, Dalwood Village Shop, and the Archway Bookstore in Axminster. They cost £6. They are also available from Sue, telephone 01404 881268, who would love to hear from anybody who would like to support the concert in any way.
