Kilmington Parish Plan 2007

Statistical Analysis of Questionnaire Data

BACKGROUND

After consultation with the community the Parish Council agreed to support the preparation of a Parish Plan.   This questionnaire was designed with the purpose of collecting evidence to support the development of a Plan.  The analyses of the data are presented in this report.  The report does not presume to draw conclusions nor recommend actions.

The content of the questions were agreed by focus groups for housing, transport and traffic, environment, education and youth, leisure including sport, business and parish services.  They were then brought together in a comprehensive questionnaire, which was delivered to 362 of the 394 properties within the Parish. The other 32 properties being either second homes, unoccupied or their owners known to be away.  336 returns were made of which 10 were blank.

It provides a snapshot of Kilmington in January in 2007 and as such is not only a source of detailed statistical information and comment on community life and concerns; but also a comprehensive social and economic record of the village in the first decade of 21st century.

There are three distinct areas to the parish each with its own concerns referred to in the questionnaire as Areas A, B and C

North of A35: Area A
West of George Lane/ Bimbom Lane: Area B
East of George Lane/Bimbom Lane: Area C

To ensure data was available to reflect these concerns and those of all ages in the population respondents were asked to identify the area in which they lived and to respond to questions be age group.

The questionnaire was complex including both questions pertinent to the household and those where individual responses from all members of the household were sought.  In total there are 60 questions with many sub sections.  Some questions invited comment, which put the flesh on to the statistical bones and give insights into the views of the different groups within the parish.

STATISTICAL NOTES

The data was input into Excel Database:

Worksheet 1 Individual Data
Worksheet 2 Household Data

This data is available on CD ROM.

Not all questions were answered in 336 returned questionnaires, indeed 10 were returned without any answers.  Many had been completed by every member of the household, but a substantial number reflected the views of only one person in a multi-member household.

People respond to questionnaires in different ways and while some follow the detail of the instructions for completing, others take a more relaxed approach, which places a responsibility on the analyst for deciding how non-standard responses are to be recorded.

Where it was possible to cross reference to other questions, for example where people ticked the wrong age box, then the data could be retrieved.  Some questions asked people to prioritise their answers but a few just ticked the boxes.  So there are questions where a decision had to be made to either interpret the data or discard it.  The decision for each one is stated by the question.

Comments

The comments fall into two categories: those that express views and therefore need to be included in their entirety and those which give information which can be listed e.g. suggestions for activities.  Where appropriate, comments are included in the appendices and a summary included in the main body of the data based on either a key word count or a manual count.  Comments are well written with few spelling or grammatical errors and it is good to know that a sense of humour is alive and well with the suggested activity of ‘naked sky diving for the over sixties’!

Databases

The data is coded alphabetically or numerically depending on the response requested.  Z is used in both the Household and Individual databases to indicate an empty cell.  In total 188,356 pieces of information (excluding comments) were entered and analysed.  The tables of data provided in this report relate specifically to the questions asked and the current need for information.  Much more information could be extracted from the databases and for this reason they were made available in electronic format with this report.
