St Giles Church News 2015 - 2017

St Giles Church Christingle Service –  December 2017

There was a great atmosphere of excitement and anticipation when the regular congregation was considerably boosted by a christening party to whom the Rev’d Simon gave a very warm welcome.  The Christmas and Memory Trees and candles symbolising Jesus as the light of the world brought thoughts of Christmas much closer and some lovely well-known Christingle songs were led by Margaret Hurford on the organ.  Rachel and Mark Burrough gave improvised scripture readings with Elana displaying appropriate illustrations from the pulpit.

Simon preached a sermon emphasising the valuable work of the Children’s Society.  Michael Marsh and Mark Burrough handed out the lighted Christingles and the children assembled by the chancel holding them while they sang the Christingle song and Away in a Manger.  It was a moving occasion and the collection was donated to the Children’s Society.

Kilmington Rememberance –  November 2017

Over 40 residents arrived in the rain at the Playing Field on 11th November to remember the Armistice Day, 99 years ago.  Commander Stafford Seward, Chairman of the RBL Kilmington Branch set off maroons to mark the Two Minutes Silence from 11.00 am; refreshments were served in the Hitchcock Pavilion afterwards.   Flags officer, Liz Stonex ensured that the Union Flag was flying high on the tower of St Giles’ Church and Coral Dunmow had prepared a welcoming poppy display in the porch for those visiting over the weekend. The Remembrance Sunday Service this year was held in the Baptist Beacon Chapel where a brilliant array of knitted poppies greeted over 160 people on arrival and the Branch Standard was displayed inside, later to be joined by the Scouts Banner.  Pastor Darrell Holmes, Branch Chaplain, designed and conducted a very moving Service during which the Lessons were read by Baptist Chris Hill and Roger Lovegrove, the Branch President.   The Rev’d Barry Brewer, a retired Priest from Seaton, gave a powerful and thought provoking address which held the attention of adults as well as the Baden Powell Scout Troop from Lyme Bay.  The collection totalling £629.65 was donated to the Poppy Appeal.

The Branch Chaplain also led the short Service at the War Memorial where even more residents had gathered for the Two Minutes Silence at 11.00 am, remembering in particular the 11 members from Kilmington who lost their lives in the Great War and three who died in the Second World War.  The Branch President laid a wreath on behalf of the RBL, Commander Stafford Seward (ret’d) on behalf of the Royal Navy, Lance Corporal Alex Hill for the British Army, Group Captain (ret’d) Brian Lavender for the Royal Air Force, PC Janette Bassett for the Police and Scout Dylan Payne for the Troop;  children also laid their tributes to the fallen.  Refreshments were served in the Baptist Chapel afterwards. Nearly 70 Branch members then went to Haselbury Mill afterwards for a Remembrance lunch in the lovely Hall.  That evening Clive Garner conducted a Quiz Evening to a packed audience in the New Inn, the proceeds of which were also donated to the Poppy Appeal.

Kilmington Songs of Praise  –  9 July 2017

The Honiton Town Band turned out in force under its Musical Director Elizabeth Carter, to lead the annual Songs of Praise held in the Vicarage Garden on Sunday 9th July.  The weather was sunny and warm but with a gentle breeze, and a large marquee and gazebo provided welcome shade.  Ten favourite hymns were introduced in turn by Brian Lavender, John Martell, Chris Thorne, Churchwarden Diana Mellows, Jean Falconer, John Thorne, Caroline Lavender, The Rev’d Simon Holloway, Barbara Woodsford and David Wilsdon, and some very interesting background was provided.  Churchwarden Christine Mills, gave a reading from St Matthews Gospel Chapter 11, and explained how she came late to her faith.  Simon sang a prayer with a simple tune for which most joined in.  The Band played magnificently in the lovely setting with views over the Axe Valley and St Giles’ Church and they thoroughly deserved refreshments provided in the Village Hall afterwards, where they talked with members of the congregation which included many from St Giles’ Church and The Beacon.  It was a most enjoyable occasion on a perfect day.

St Giles’ Church Fete  –  July 2017

On behalf of all members of St Giles’ Church, I would like to thank everyone who made our Annual Fete such an outstanding success.  The glorious weather attracted young and old, and the efforts of the stall-holders, cake makers, those who donated raffle and tombola prizes were much appreciated.  Those who organised competitions and games did a great job and the refreshments made and served by our loyal and hard working team were delicious, particularly the Devon cream teas.  Thanks also to Finin Quincey who entertained us on the keyboard throughout the event.  Over £1,000 was raised for Church funds which will be very helpful in view of the large expenditure experienced recently.

Holy Week and Easter Service  -  June 2017

The Holy Week Tuesday Communion led by the Rev’d Simon was well attended as was the Good Friday Coffee morning at which hot cross buns were served while the Kilmington Kanter was in progress.  In the afternoon, Simon, assisted by Gill Heighway, led a moving Service in St Giles’ Church commemorating the walk up the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem by Jesus, carrying the Cross, prior to he death on Calvary.   22 “Disciples” gathered at the symbolic tomb (Shute Woods Beacon House) at 7.00 am for a short informal Service to “Reflect on the Empty Tomb”.   The final hymn “Jesus Christ is Risen Today” echoed down the Axe Valley proclaiming the good news of Christ’s resurrection!   The 11.00 am Family Service in a beautifully decorated Church, led again by the Rev’d Simon, was a joyful occasion when many residents and visitors took their Easter Communion.   The children enjoyed an Easter egg hunt afterwards.

Sad losses among St Giles’ Church Congregation  -  April 2017

Sadly we have lost four members of our congregation in recent weeks.  The first was Betty Parkinson whose life was commemorated in the March editions of the Parishes Paper and Post-script and whose body was cremated after a well attended Service of Thanksgiving at the East Devon Crematorium on 13th February.   Next was Phyllis Willey who had worshipped in St Giles’ Church for many years and who often came to pray on her own on weekdays;  unfortunately, news of her death did not reach the congregation until after she was buried in Axminster Church on Wednesday 8th March.

Alan Harding, who with his wife Valerie, used to be very regular members of the congregation, was cremated at the Exeter Crematorium after a Service of Thanksgiving on Wednesday 15th March.   Finally, Julia Chapple, who worshipped regularly in St Giles’ Church with husband Ken and son Ivan, was interred in the Churchyard after a Service of Thanksgiving in our Church on Friday17th March.   Please remember their families and pray that others will replace them in the worshipping congregation.

Carols at Millers Farm Shop  -  Dec 2016

Anna Crabbe led the annual Village Carol Singing at Millers Farm Shop on Saturday 17th December, by kind permission of Malcolm and the family.  Many residents which included members of both the Anglican and Baptist Churches in Kilmington and their Ministers were joined by shoppers from the local area who clearly enjoyed singing the carols, accompanied by a number of musicians.  Mulled wine, hot drinks and snacks were provided. It was a lovely occasion.

RBL (Kilmington Branch) Christmas Coffee Morning  -  November 2016

The RBL Christmas Coffee morning was held on Saturday 26 November. The Village Hall was festively decorated and was soon buzzing with lively chatter as about 100 people enjoyed their choice of tea, coffee or mulled wine and tucked into their mince pies. There were a number of stalls selling cakes, preserves, Christmas gifts and garden plants plus the customary raffle.

Three County representatives had joined the gathering and the County Chairman made presentations to Brian and Caroline Lavender for their 20 years of service as organisers of the Poppy Appeal in the Village. They have handed the baton on to Peter and Louise Wood. Additionally, Brian Lavender and Michael O’Flaherty were made Life Vice Presidents of the Kilmington Branch in recognition of their many years of service to the Legion.  The Coffee Morning raised over £1200 for Legion funds and was declared a total success and much enjoyed by all those who attended.

Kilmington & the Season of Remembrance - Oct/Nov 2016

The annual Service of Remembrance of the Royal British Legion Kilmington Branch was this year celebrated at an ecumenical service in St Giles’ Church. This was led by the Revd Simon Holloway and an Address was given by Pastor Darrell Holmes, the Kilmington Branch Chaplain; the lessons were read by Royal Engineer Lance Corporal Alex Hill and Scout Ethan Crossley-Sloman.  The Branch Standard was displayed on the altar and the Lyme Bay Scout Troop paraded and presented their standard. The collection from the packed congregation was in aid of the Poppy Appeal.

Most of the congregation then made their way to the War Memorial, where they were joined by other villagers for the Remembrance ceremony. Prayers were led by Pastor Darrell, who also read out the names of the fallen from the two World Wars. The Exhortation was given by the Branch Chairman, Commander (Ret’d) Stafford Seward  OBE who also laid a wreath on behalf of the RBL & Royal Navy, as did Marine Hewkin for the Royal Marines, Lance Corporal Alex Hill for the British Army, Group Captain (Ret’d) Brian Lavender OBE AFC for the Royal Air Force, Scout Charlie Dare for the Scout movement and also by a police representative.  After coffee in the Village Hall later, 63 members and guests went by coach to the Haselbury Mill for Sunday lunch. During the evening a Quiz Night was held at the New Inn, organised and compered by Clive Garner. The proceeds from the evening went to the Poppy Appeal.

On Armistice Day, 11 November at 11 o’clock, a large group of RBL members and other Kilmington residents had gathered outside the Playing Fields Pavilion to mark the two-minute silence. Maroons were fired by the Branch Chairman and by the President, Roger Lovegrove, to indicate the start and end of the silence. Refreshments were served afterwards in the Pavilion.

RBL WWI Commemoration - September 2016

Over 70 members of the Kilmington Branch attended the WWI Commemoration Supper in the Village Hall on Saturday 17th September and were welcomed by Chairman Commander Stafford Seward.  Dr David Ingles (on his birthday) started the proceedings with a very interesting and detailed account of the Battle of the Somme, concentrating on the involvement of Kilmington soldiers who had taken part, several of whom had fallen.  Some of their war graves were visited during the Devon County tour of the battlefield last March.  Commander Angus Falconer followed with an account of the Battle of Jutland which was also well described and illustrated.  A very enjoyable supper prepared by Claire Dainton followed.  Some £758 profit was made which was donated to the Poppy Appeal.

St Giles Church Fete - September 2016

It was a lovely day for the St Giles’ Church Annual Fete on Saturday 16th July, the arrangements for which were co-ordinated by Diana Mellows with members of the Social and Fundraising Committee and others organising the stalls, refreshments and raffle.  There was fun for the children as well and, although attendance was not quite as good as usual (gone to the beach?) over £1,000 was raised for church funds.  Thank you to everyone who helped organise the event and to those who supported it.

Kilmngton Fayre & Flower Show - July 2016

Saturday 30th July saw a new venue for the Annual Kilmington Fayre and Flower Show which moved from the usual site on the Village playing field to the Village Hall and field behind.   This allowed some new attractions: pony rides, vintage tractors, cars and motorcycles which were a welcome addition.   The Flower Show is always well supported and this year was no exception with a good number of entries in over 130 classes. The quality of the flowers and produce in the floral marquee was outstanding, as were all the children’s craft classes. In the Hall, a splendid display of art, photography, cookery and handicrafts, which were also of a very high standard, gave the judges some tough decisions in awarding the twenty plus cups which were up for grabs.   Outside, a sunny afternoon saw a busy Fayre with families having fun at the games and browsing the stalls. A band brought the whole Fayre to life and there was plenty to eat and drink.

The Kilmington Branch of the RBL ran the BBQ and the Village pre-school served the ice creams, both raising funds for their very worthwhile organisations. The Baptist church provided cream teas and the Old Inn ran the bar.   In the arena the children’s fancy dress, ladies hat competition and some amusing dog games kept everyone entertained. Tales of pirates on the high seas told by The Rattle Box Theatre Company enthralled the children. All in all all, a thoroughly good afternoon at a traditional Village Fayre.

NGS Gardens Weekend - June 2016

After a good Saturday on 18th June, with plenty of visitors, the rain (and Andy Murray’s tennis match!) understandably deterred many from wandering around our gardens on the Sunday afternoon.  However, we were pleased to send a total of £811 (ticket/plant sales and donations) to NGS which will benefit many cancer and other charities - St Giles’ Church raised £279 from tea and cake sales. On behalf of Breach and Spinney Two, many thanks for visiting our gardens.

RBL (Kilmington Branch) Annual Family BBQ - July 2016

During a period of rather inclement weather, it was fortunate that on 1st July, the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of the Somme, the sun shone although it was a bit chilly later.  Branch Chairman, Stafford Seward, welcomed over 100 people to Fernwood Farm where the grounds were well decorated and Rodney and Jennie Giles were preparing a magnificent BBQ.

The Seward family ensured that everything was highly organised with the help of Branch Committee members so that all could thoroughly enjoy the evening.  The only sombre note was during the Exhortation, led by Stafford, in memory of the thousands killed on that fateful day in 1916.  Some £1,300 was raised for the Poppy Appeal thanks to much hard work by many.

The weather warmed up just in time to bring out the flowers and visitors alike to view 6 lovely gardens and allotments in Kilmington over the weekend.  Apart from Kilmington residents, many from outlying villages were touring the gardens and enjoying a choc ice at Springhead House and delicious cake with tea at The Acorn, with entertainment by the Jurassic Coasters.   We are pleased to report that, after printing and insurance costs, a total of £1,121 was raised from tickets, plant and refreshment sales which will be shared between Kilmington Village Hall and St Giles’ Church.   Thank you to the ‘Open Gardeners’ and everyone who visited, helped and supported this event. A terrific result – the best yet, which will benefit two of our important village amenities.

St George’s Day Service in Kilmington - April 2016

Picture
Anna Crabbe with Finin Quincey & Ben Leahy
A special Service was organised to celebrate St George’s Day in St Giles’ Church on Sunday 24th April which started with a parade by the Lyme Bay Scout Troop marching into Church with their Banner which was laid on the altar by Anna Crabbe, who was leading the Service in her trainee Reader robes.  Appropriate rousing hymns were led my Margaret Hurford and the choir, while the Readings were given by David and Julie Woodward, and Anna, who then interviewed Finin Quincey and Ben Leahy who gave very enthusiastic accounts about their experiences in Duke of Edinburgh expeditions during which Anna was their assessor.   Scout Troop leaders Simon Payne and Richard Norman (one of St Giles’ Church Bell ringers) then explained about the origins of the Scout Movement and about the activities of the Lyme Bay (Baden Powell) Scout Troop. They then led present and past members of the Scout movement (of whom there were several in the Congregation) in renewing their Scout Promise.   Gill Heighway led the intercessional prayers and Anna handed back the Scout Banner which was paraded out.   It was lovely to see the scouts so smartly dressed in their uniforms and so many young people in Church.   St George would have been very proud of them!

Lent Lunches in aid of Tear Fund

Each Thursday during Lent delicious homemade soup was served in Kilmington Village Hall, together with bread rolls, cheese and chutney, followed by tea and coffee. They were extremely social events and much enjoyed. The soups varied from week to week;  there was plenty of it and, after any expenses, the proceeds will be sent to Tear Fund, the charity providing help to the refugees in the Middle East and Africa. The lunches were organised by St Giles' Social and Fundraising Committee, chaired by Anne Marsh. Thank you to everyone who has supported this series of lunches.

Mothering Sunday - March 2016

The Rev’d Nigel Freathy led the Mothering Sunday Service on the 6th March explaining at the start that there were three elements involved;  the Mother Church, Mary the mother of Jesus, and Mothers throughout the world who he described as “awesome”;  he went on to explain why.  The young musicians from St Marys’ RC Church School played some popular songs under the direction of Rachel Burrough with help from Margaret Hurford on the piano and organ.  The readings were given by Gill Heighway and Ann Marsh which included references to perfume being used as gifts.  Asked by Nigel to suggest suitable gifts for mothers on this significant day, there were a number proposed and one of the children chose perfume!  The intercession prayers were given by Alun Evans before posies, beautifully prepared by Coral Dunmow and Valerie Quick, were presented to the mothers and ladies while some were taken home for neighbours.  It was a wonderful and relaxed Service which was clearly enjoyed by all present and the traditional simnel cake prepared by Sally Huscroft and Ann Marsh was enjoyed over tea and coffee afterwards.

St Giles’ Church Christmas Services - December 2015

St Giles’ Church was beautifully decorated for the candle lit Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols on Sunday 20th December with Christmas and Memory Trees kindly donated by Millers Farm Shop and the manger, adding to the ambience of the occasion.  The Rev’d Simon gave a warm welcome to everyone which included many family visitors, and the Service continued without announcements.  All the Readings given by Village residents, the youngest being Emily Dare, were excellent. and the choir under the direction of Margaret Hurford led the carols and performed beautiful anthems.  There was a short homily by the Rev’d Simon and mulled wine and mince-pies, co-ordinated by Liz Stonex, were much enjoyed afterwards in a very festive atmosphere.  The collection of some £340 was donated to the charity “Embrace the Middle East “ which is doing such good work in support of Syrian refugees.

The Crib Service on Christmas Eve attracted many families bringing nativity figures with knitted sheep and lambs to place in the crib.  The young musicians in the orchestra from St Mary’s RC Primary School, conducted by Rachel Burrough, led the songs and carols very well.  The Service of Holy Communion that evening was also well attended and nearly 50 adults and children came to the Christmas Day Communion at which the Rev’d Anne Mills gave a delightful Christmas story about her granddaughter.

In the two week period over Christmas, 302 adults worshipped in St Giles’ Church with 39 children; this excluded the pupils and staff at two school assemblies, and the adults attending Tuesday Communion Services as well as those calling in for private prayer and to hang their stars on the Memory Tree bearing the names of loved ones absent over Christmas.  Dying Churches?  It was obvious that St Giles’ Church is not one of them!

Awards for RBL Poppy Appeal Collectors - 28th November 2015

At a Festive Coffee morning organised by the Kilmington Branch of the Royal British Legion  on Saturday 28th November, awards were presented to eight long serving Poppy Appeal Collectors.   Bill Barker (ex Royal Artillery) received a certificate for collecting over 25 years and a Merit Badge, Gerry Hurford (ex Royal Army Service Corps) and his wife Pearl earned 15 year certificates and badges, Simon Heighway (ex RAF) and his wife Gill as well as Margaret Andrews were awarded 10 year certificates and Jennie Giles with Louise Quincey earned 5 year certificates.  In the two weeks of the Poppy Appeal ending on Remembrance Sunday this year, £2,783 was raised in Kilmington, a remarkable total for a small village.   The Branch Chairman, Commander Stafford Seward OBE RN (Ret’d),  thanked the collectors and the Poppy Appeal Coordinators, Caroline and Brian Lavender.

The Village Hall was beautifully decorated to give both a Christmas spirit and a British Legion one and was almost filled to capacity as members and visitors flocked around the stalls, most finding something to buy for Christmas while enjoying refreshments which included mulled wine and mince pies.   Commander Seward thanked everyone for the wonderful support for this occasion which had been organised so well by Committee members, in particular, Lesley Rew whose daughter is married to a Serving Royal Marine who is a member of the Branch. The proceeds of the morning raised just over £1,300 which will be added to the total donated to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

Pew Bibles for St Giles’ Church - 25th October

During a Family Service on Sunday 25th October, led by Mark Burrough, Gillian Purves on behalf of her sister Diana Smith and their families presented St Giles’ Church with twenty new Bibles for pew use in memory of their mother Philippa Beckingsale.  Anna Crabbe, on behalf of every member of the Church thanked them for the very generous and useful gift, explaining that Philippa had been a very active and well loved member of the congregation and was greatly missed.  It was a very appropriate time for the presentation being Bible Sunday, and Rachel Burrough led a well prepared presentation, with the help of the children, illustrating that the Bible was a treasure-chest of writings giving guidance from Jesus, the Prophets and Apostles on how to live our lives.  Adults and children were kept busy with writing short prayers as jewels to the treasure-chest which were left by the altar.  The Lessons were read by Ann Marsh and Rachel Burrough while Mark Burrough gave very relevent Intercessions.

Harvest Thanksgiving - October 2015

Harvest Thanksgiving is a real excuse for an excess of colourful flowers and produce, and the St. Giles’ Flower Arranging Team had made sure that this year was no exception. Every ledge, corner, windowsill and pedestal had been lovingly adorned with delightfully festive arrangements. It was a real feast for the eyes of the congregation when they arrived for the Harvest Festival Service on Sunday morning. The Service, led by The Rev’d Simon Holloway was more contemporary than usual with hymns and songs, some loved and well known and others not so familiar and accompanied by guitar and band. A beautiful Harvest Loaf in the form of a sheaf of corn was displayed on the altar. This had been supplied by the Punch and Judy Bakery in Bridport, they also gave the delicious bread that was served with the cheese at the Harvest Supper next day. Thank you to Steve for his generosity.

The following evening the Village Hall was filled to the brim with harvest goodwill. The meal was excellent and much enjoyed by all, young and old, and a big thank you to Caroline Lavender and her team for providing and serving such a delicious supper, thank you to everyone who cooked and baked. There was a Raffle of all the Harvest Produce from the Church which was very successful. The Merry Monks from Lyme Regis, looking as though they had just left the cloisters of a nearby monastery, entertained the assembled company with a variety of songs and witticisms which rounded off the evening in fine style. It was a splendid evening and over £400 had been raised for the West Country Charity Shelter Box.

Devon Historic Churches Sponsored Walk - 12th September 2015

36 people aged from 80+ to 5 years old with nine dogs, led by Bryan Drew, set off from Yarcombe Church at about 10.15 am on Saturday 12th September to raise funds for the Trust that helps with grants to maintain historic churches in Devon.  Twenty minutes into the walk, the heavens opened and we were all drenched, but the clouds disappeared after about 30 minutes and the sun and warm breeze soon dried us off.  We were well received at all the churches visited – Yarcombe, Stockland, Dalwood, Shute and Kilmington, and we took in the Loughwood and Whitford Chapels in the process.  The Rev’d Simon led us all in readings and prayers appropriate to all these historic places of worship, and refreshments were kindly provided by helpers at all five of the main churches.  We had a very welcome lunchtime break at the Tuckers Arms in Dalwood where delicious soup and toast, and for some a beer or glass of wine, were enjoyed.

Obviously a few left the walk as 12.5 miles was not an easy target, but the very impressive thing was the way in which all the children performed magnificently and with great enthusiasm.  If there had been a gold star award, it would have undoubtedly have gone to 5 year old Giles Burrough whose little legs kept him going to the end!  While the sponsorship money has still to be counted, this effort by the Five Alive Mission Community walkers showed great spirit with 24 walkers completing the whole course only 3 minutes behind schedule!  We owe much to Bryan Drew who planned the route meticulously, rehearsing it by himself to ensure that we could see some delightful scenery and  that we could experience a great variety of paths, fields, river crossings etc.  The dogs obviously enjoyed themselves too!
