St Giles’ Church - A Millennium
Churches have always been a fascination to many people and to have a publication of an individual church helps to retain its identity by recording its history, and in the case of St Giles’ Church, its present active role in the community.
The first two chapters give an outline of the growth of Christianity in Britain and the development of a parish church. St Giles’ Church was rebuilt during the Victorian era and the original church and the building of the new church are carefully documented.
The author takes the reader through a journey of the church highlighting most of its features and giving, in some instances, a brief history of why the features are of historical importance to the church and the village of Kilmington. The churchyard and many other interesting aspects of the church are explained in later chapters as are the past and present activities. The appendices are helpful in listing a number of aspects of the church, its clergy, churchwardens as well as a useful glossary.
This valuable and comprehensive hardback book is illustrated in full colour, with photographs, drawings and copies of old documents. It is hoped that the reader will enjoy this account of this village church and be inspired to find out more about its founder.
Copies can be obtained from the church historian and local author Michael Tyler (01297 34958) or from the back of the church at £15.00.
