The Royal British Legion

Poppy Appeal

Picture
The Poppy Appeal is the Royal British Legion’s national fundraising campaign held annually in the two weeks prior to 11 November. The red poppy is a national symbol of Remembrance. Wearing a poppy is a way of showing appreciation for the service and sacrifice of our Armed forces, veterans and their families, both past and present and raises vital funds that help the Royal British Legion support the Armed Forces community. It represents all those who lost their lives on active service, from the beginning of the First World War right up to present day. It also honours the contribution of civilian services and the uniformed services which contribute to national peace and security and acknowledges innocent civilians who have lost their lives in conflict and acts of terrorism.

Since emerging as a symbol of Remembrance after the First World War, poppies worn during the Poppy Appeal have come in a range of shapes and sizes from handmade silk and cotton poppies to the new plastic-free poppy made entirely from paper.

The RBL has a member’s website log in, you need your membership number. If, as a Kilmington member, you cannot find your number contact our membership secretary (see below) who will be able to help you.

Kilmington Branch

The British Legion was founded by Earl Haig in 1921 after the people in Britain and within the Empire learned of the horror that was World War I.  The poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae, a Canadian doctor serving in Ypres, stimulated its formation and the adoption of the poppy as a symbol of hope and reassurance.  Under the guidance of Major George Howson MC, a small group of disabled ex-Servicemen started to make artificial poppies which were first sold in 1921 to help those who survived the fighting, some terribly mutilated in mind and body.

The Kilmington RBL Branch was formed on 6 March 1925 and has over 110 members with Ben Greaves as Branch Chairman. In addition to the monies raised during the Poppy Appeal, the Kilmington Branch has other fund-raising events throughout the year.  Our Spring and Christmas coffee mornings are extremely popular as is our Summer BBQ attracting a large turnout from across the village raising valuable funds for the RBL.  With no club house, monthly “Get-Togethers” are held at local Inn’s for an hour on the first Friday in the month.
The Poppy Appeal

Kilmington has always been very generous in supporting the Poppy Appeal. We have a small team of volunteers who deliver a gift aid envelope and two poppies to every house in the village. Villagers who want to donate, simply complete the Gift Aid envelope, seal it with their donation inside and take it to the Baptist Church Kilmington where a collection box is available.  Completing the Gift Aid form means we can claim an extra 25p for every £1 donated. Traditional collection tins are also available at Miller’s Farm Shop, Starbucks, The Baptist Church, St Giles Church, Texaco Garage, Greggs and the New Inn. A special ‘schools’ pack of Poppy Appeal merchandise is also available at Kilmington Primary School.

Anyone requiring more information please contact David Dowden (Membership Secretary) on 01297 32128 or email: [email protected] or Ben Greaves (Chairman) [email protected]. If you would like to join our team helping during the Poppy Appeal, please get in contact Peter Squire.
We Need Your Help

The branch is always actively seeking new members. Whilst we have over 100 members, we still need more members to support our Armed Forces personnel, their dependents and veterans. The annual subscription pays all the administrative and production costs of the Poppy Appeal including the employment of disabled Service personnel. Please sign up for membership now, you do not need to be ex-Service yourself. Kilmington's branch number is: BR 2346.
